A Piece of Heppner History
Originally the Roberts Building, Murray’s Drug in Heppner was built in 1901 as a replacement for the local saloon, later known as the Rock Saloon. The building was constructed from stone harvested from a local quarry on Balm Fork and designed to endure.
It survived the flood of 1903, considered the worst natural disaster in Oregon’s history. Over the years, the building has been home to many businesses, including an opera house, dance hall, bowling alley, and photography studio.
In 1959, Rod and Meg Murray took over the local drug store, later purchasing the building in 1973. The store expanded into the neighboring I.O.O.F. building — formerly the Roy Quackenbush Grocery — and remains in the Murray family today.
Now operated by the second generation of the Murray family, the business continues to serve the community as it has for more than a century, with a third generation actively involved and preparing to carry on the tradition.
